While being held a prisoner in a Nazi war camp, Allied officer Hilts 'The Cooler King' (Steve McQueen) tries to find a way to escape Stalag Luft III. Hilts discovers that two of the prison watchtowers have blind spots that meet at a specific part of the fence. He tosses his baseball over the line the prisoners are prohibited from crossing to to test this theory.
